Some new insights into information decomposition in complex systems based on common information

چکیده
We take a closer look at the structure of bivariate dependency induced by a pair of predictor random variables (X1, X2) trying to synergistically, redundantly or uniquely encode a target random variable Y. We evaluate a recently proposed measure of redundancy based on the Gács and Körner's common information (Griffith et al., Entropy 2014, 16, 1985–2000) and show that the measure, in spite of its elegance is degenerate for most non-trivial distributions. We show that Wyner's common information also fails to capture the notion of redundancy as it violates an intuitive monotonically non-increasing property. We identify a set of conditions when a conditional version of Gács and Körner's common information is an ideal measure of unique information. Finally, we show how the notions of approximately sufficient statistics and conditional information bottleneck can be used to quantify unique information.

The brain – computer interface (BCI) provides a communicational channel between human and machine. Most of these systems are based on brain activities. Brain Computer-Interfacing is a methodology that provides a way for communication with the outside environment using the brain thoughts. The success of this methodology depends on the selection of methods to process the brain signals in each pha...

متن کاملAccelerated decomposition techniques for large discounted Markov decision processes
Many hierarchical techniques to solve large Markov decision processes (MDPs) are based on the partition of the state space into strongly connected components (SCCs) that can be classified into some levels. In each level, smaller problems named restricted MDPs are solved, and then these partial solutions are combined to obtain the global solution. In this paper, we first propose a novel algorith...
متن کاملA review of agent-based modeling (ABM) concepts and some of its main applications in management science
We live in a very complex world where we face complex phenomena such as social norms and new technologies. To deal with such phenomena, social scientists often use reductionism approach where they reduce them to some lower-lever variables and model the relationships among them through a scheme of equations. This approach that is called equation based modeling (EBM) has some basic weaknesses in ...
متن کاملFUZZY RISK ANALYSIS BASED ON A NEW METHOD FOR RANKING GENERALIZED FUZZY NUMBERS
Fuzzy risk analysis, as a powerful tool to address uncertain information, can provide an appropriate method for risk analysis. However, the previous fuzzy risk analysis methods still have some weaknesses. To overcome the weaknesses of existing fuzzy risk analysis methods, a novel method for ranking generalized fuzzy numbers is proposed for addressing fuzzy risk analysis problems. In the propose...
